„Hello Translator,
I hope you are doing well.
My name is John Kevin, and I am coordinating the preparation of a multilingual literary edition featuring selected short stories by O. Henry.
I am currently getting in touch with translators who work with literary and narrative material to learn more about their language combinations, availability, and experience with fiction.
Project background
The source material is taken from O. Henry’s 100 Selected Stories. The current selection is approximately 51 pages, or around 20,700 words in English.
The work is intended as a literary translation rather than a straightforward word-for-word conversion. The translated stories should remain faithful to the original while reading naturally and fluently in the target language.
This includes maintaining the meaning and context of the source text, while giving appropriate attention to:
– Narrative voice and style
– Dialogue and characterization
– Tone and atmosphere
– Idiomatic expressions
– Humor and cultural references
– Paragraph and story structure
– Consistency throughout the collection
– Natural readability in the target language
Languages currently being considered
We are currently considering editions in the following languages:
Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Korean, Dutch, Finnish, Irish, Polish, Russian, Tatar, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Greek, Turkish, Ukrainian, Hebrew, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, and Malay.
The relevant language combination would depend on the translator’s expertise and native or strongest working language.
Current project stage
The project is currently in the planning and translator-availability stage. There is no fixed delivery date at this point.
Rather than setting the same deadline for everyone, we would prefer to establish a realistic schedule with each translator based on their current workload, experience, and normal working capacity for approximately 20,700 words of literary material.
Information I would appreciate
If this project is within your area of work, please let me know:
1. Your English → target-language combination
2. Whether you currently have availability for a project of approximately 20,700 words
3. Your estimated turnaround time
4. A brief overview of your experience with literary translation, fiction, short stories, novels, or similar material
5. Your usual rate for literary translation, preferably stated per source word
If you have previously worked on published fiction or other literary projects, you are welcome to mention that as well.
At this stage, there is no obligation to accept the project. I am simply gathering availability and relevant experience so that the appropriate language editions can be planned with translators whose background is suitable for the material.
If your language combination and availability are compatible with the project, I can then provide the fuller project information for your consideration, including the specific scope, source material, formatting requirements, expected deliverables, schedule, and agreed working arrangements.
Thank you for taking the time to read my inquiry. I would be glad to hear from you whenever convenient.
Kind regards,
John Kevin
Project Coordinator”
Tak właśnie wygląda jeden z rodzajów oszustwa.
