Regulation on the Admission of Natural Persons as Members of the Association of Polish Translators and Interpreters (APTI)

1. General provisions
   1. The rules on the admission of members of the Association of Polish Translators and Interpreters (APTI) are outlined in the Bylaws of APTI and these Regulations.
   2. Any adult citizen of the Republic of Poland or a foreigner, including those residing outside the boundaries of Poland, having full capacity for acts in law and not being deprived of public rights, may become a regular member of APTI, having jointly met the following requirements:
      1. they have expressed the willingness to join APTI by submitting the Declaration of Membership,
      2. they have obtained the recommendation of two regular members,
      3. they have documented their translation experience in accordance with these Regulations and have been granted a positive opinion by the Admissions Committee,
      4. they have been accepted by the Executive Board of APTI.
   3. A person applying to become a member, declaring several languages, shall document their experience and submit sample translations in all the languages declared.
   4. The requirements listed under sections I.2.A. and I.2.B., as well as I.3 above, shall not apply to:
      1. the members of AIIC and the International PEN CLUB,
      2. staff translators or interpreters employed in international institutions (e. g. United Nations agencies and others),
      3. persons having the status of accredited translators or interpreters in the European Union institutions

      and who attach to their Declaration of Membership only a copy of the document confirming their membership or employment, or the fact that they have passed the accreditation exam.

2. Recommendation
   1. Recommendation may be granted by the regular members of APTI, however at least one of them should be translating in the same mode and language as the person submitting the Declaration.
   2. The Admissions Committee may ask the introducing members for an additional written recommendation.
3. Authority of the Admissions Committee of the Board of APTI
   1. On the basis of the documents submitted, the Admissions Committee may:
      1. issue a positive opinion,
      2. issue a negative opinion,
      3. request that the person submitting the Declaration presents supplementary materials,
      4. forward the documentation to be reviewed by the specialists not being the members of the Admissions Committee,
      5. condition the issuing of the opinion upon the performance of an aptitude test.
   2. The decision of the Admissions Committee shall be sent to the candidate in writing, and in the event that the application has been rejected, the substantiation shall also be sent upon request of the candidate.
   3. The person whose application has been rejected by the Admissions Committee shall have the right to appeal to the Executive Board of APTI.
   4. In justified cases the Admissions Committee may submit the application to an individual review procedure, forbearing from the requirements of these Regulations.
4. General Criteria
   1. As far as the translations of the literary texts and other types of translations not included in these Regulations are concerned, the criteria based on analogy shall be applied.
   2. Editorial and mark-up work may be seen as complementary to the translation experience in justified cases.
   3. Sample translations reaching up to 20 standardized pages (1 page = 1600 ASCII signs) along with the copies of the original texts (to be returned) shall be submitted along with the Declaration.
5. Detailed Criteria
   1. Conference interpretation
      1. The required interpretation experience shall amount to:
         1. 40 working days for the following languages: English, French, and German,
         2. 20 working days for the remaining European languages,
         3. 10 working days for non-European languages.
      2. The information, such as language, interpretation mode (simultaneous or consecutive), subject matter, date and number of workdays shall be included in the statements documenting the interpretation experience.
   2. Translation of literary texts
      1. The required translation experience shall amount to 20 publishing sheets of prose translation or 1000 verses of poetry translation.
      2. The Admissions Committee may relax the requirements regarding the scope of the translation experience with respect to the translations from rare languages.
   3. Translation of journalistic, scientific, technical and other specialised texts
      1. The required translation experience shall amount to 30 publishing sheets.
      2. The Admissions Committee may relax the requirements regarding the scope of the translation experience with respect to the translations from rare languages.
   4. Sworn translation and interpretation
      1. The required translation and interpretation experience included in the translator’s register shall amount to:
         1. 300 pages of translations in the following languages: English, French, and German or
         2. 150 pages of translations in the remaining European languages, or
         3. 75 pages of translations in non-European languages, or
         4. 100 working hours of an interpreter in the following languages: English, French, and German, or
         5. 50 working hours of an interpreter in the other European languages, or
         6. 35 working hours of an interpreter in non-European languages
      2. The Committee may relax the requirements with respect to the rare languages.
      3. Due to professional secrecy the sworn translators are bound by, all the personal data, case file numbers and other data that may identify the subject matter or the entity involved in the case included for translation shall be erased from sample translations submitted to the Admissions Committee.
6. Adding of Translation and Interpretation Modes and Languages
   1. The regular members who since the moment they were admitted to APTI have obtained new qualifications within the scope of translation and interpretation modes or languages may address the Admissions Committee for their addition to the ones already declared.
   2. The criteria outlined under section V of these Regulations shall apply with respect to any new mode or language.

These Regulations were adopted by the Executive Board of APTI on 3 February 2010 by virtue of Resolution No. 27.
